You’re point is that a desktop with 15+ years development is far more stable than one with 3+ years… did that really need to be said… let alone require several paragraphs?
My HAL comment was not MATE specific but related to GTK apps in general. If you install GIMP you get HAL. I filed a bug many months ago to the FreeBSD ports tree requesting to have HAL removed as a dependency from GVFS (which GIMP needs) due to the security vulnerabilities and it has not been acted upon. So if you install anything that needs GVFS and you haven’t compiled GFVS without HAL support yourself…enjoy the remote code exploit you’ve got on your system.
Here is the crux of the issue though, everyone has an application that they feel we should use as default. You feel its the Desktop and that it should be Mate. We had members who were very forward about the fact that they felt the default desktop should be KDE. Every user will have their own opinions about what they feel should be the default. it’s impossible to develop an OS that makes everyone happy… that’s why you can install whatever you want on your own.
Until someone in the trenches and is involved in the debates/discussions we have had about every single one of these points… saying 'You should do what I want." is just an exercise in being self-centered. There are applications that we include that I would prefer we didn’t, but the decision was made to include them because it was the best option. As much as I may not like that, I accept that is the best decision based on the details.
If someone is looking for a FreeBSD based operating system with MATE, SLIM, Firefox (for example… I’d recommend they check out FreeBSD @ http://freebsd.org. It’s a great project made by great people.
If whoever doesnt want to set up FreeBSD on their own, they can check out the GhostBSD project @ http://ghostbsd.org. A GTK based FreeBSD desktop operating system already exists, I dont understand why people want to try to turn TrueOS into what GhostBSD already is.
